Holy Cross Church, located in Juhu Tara, Mumbai, has a rich history dating back to around 1868 when it was initially established as a small chapel. At that time, it was affiliated with St. Blaise Church in Amboli. In 1918, the chapel became affiliated with St. Joseph’s Church in Juhu.
Around 1941, the church acquired additional land, and in 1950, a fenced compound wall was built around the premises. In 1956, under the guidance of the first resident Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Thomas Fernandes, the Parochial house was erected.
In 1979, the parish was handed over to the Pilar Society from Goa, under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Joseph Dias and Rev. Fr. Thomas Gonsalves. The Pilar Fathers, known for their dynamic approach, took over the management of the church.
Today, Holy Cross Church is a thriving community of approximately 1,500 parishioners. It is recognized as one of the vibrant parishes in the suburbs of Mumbai, actively engaged in spreading God’s word. The church owes its success to the talented and dedicated parishioners who contribute their skills and devotion to the mission of the church.
Vision Statement
“TO BUILD A SPIRIT FILLED PARTICIPATIVE COMMUNITY OF FAITH THAT FOCUSSES ON THE FAMILIES AND THE MARGINALISED”
By all means, it is a powerful Vision statement that provides for goal oriented action, encompassing the three strong pillars of the Christian spirituality, viz: FAITH, FAMILIES and the MARGINALISED. In a world full of day-to-day conflicts, violence, human suffering, deprivation and destitution, the Church and the community is called upon to play an active role as a beacon of hope, love and serenity. The Vision statement beautifully links up to what Pope Francis has spoken so often about: strengthening the practice of Faith, bonding of Families and bringing succour to the marginalised. Therefore, translating the Vision into day to day action is a big challenge and calls for collaborative effort amongst the various constituents, so as to touch the lives of the people.
